Piazza would ruin the village

Posted on July 31 2017 at 12:18:42

I think the idea of turning The Square in Alvechurch into a piazza (Village News, July 2017) would be the end of the shops and small businesses there.

We would lose 21 parking spaces, including the disabled parking, which causes concern; how are less-able people supposed to access the doctor, dentist and chemist as well as the surrounding shops?

Every day I see people driving into The Square and using the parking facilities, sometimes having to drive around two or three times before finding one so that they can pop into their local shops.

During the early 1980s, yellow lines were put down in The Square to let the bigger lorries come through the village; the result was a loss of trade.

When the M42 was built we understood that the lines would be removed, then it was to be done after the bypass was built   . . . 30 years on we are still waiting!

The shops and small businesses are here to serve the village community and surrounding areas first and foremost as well as making a living.

We are not on the Continent, but in England. What happens during the winter when people have less access to quickly pop in and out of the shops?

Finally, addressing the concerns about the empty shops in the village, by the time this magazine is published, the only empty building will be the former David Matthews Insurance premises.
