Sand

Having visited Barnt Green at about 1pm one day, I was amazed to find the footpath outside the Happy Valley Chinese takeaway blocked by an illegally-parked car.

No doubt the driver was far too hurried to find a space to park legally.

The previous weekend, a driveway contractor on Sandhills Lane left the footpath virtually impassable with a mound of sand (right).

The deliberate obstruction of public footpaths through inconsiderate parking, along with builders and driveway contractors leaving materials in the footway, has become endemic in society nowadays.

People fail to realise that their actions have consequences as all they care about is themselves. Do they not realise that they would be liable for any injury or damage caused as a result of their wanton obstruction of the footpath?

It is an offence under Section 137 of the Highways Act 1980 to willfully obstruct the public highway, and that includes the footpath – and it is about time that offenders were prosecuted and made an example of to deter further wrongdoers.
