PACT is reborn in Alvechurch – rejoice! Well, let’s hope so. Readers will be aware of our support for grassroots forums and our fear that the people of a large community would be left with little or no voice after the demise of the previous incarnation of Partners And Communities Together.
Now Alvechurch and Beoley are at the forefront of a new-style and, it must be said, experimental PACT. As Sgt Ben Hembry says, “it is far more progressive than anything else” in the West Mercia policing area.
But will it work? The idea is to manage meetings so they don’t boil over into one-sided slanging matches, with angry villagers jabbing their fingers at members of the panel.
It was no wonder that some panel members, who gave up their evenings to try to help people, decided they didn’t want to be targets for scattergun abuse.
After nine months of talking, a panel will poke their heads above the parapet again at Alvechurch Village Hall on October 12 hoping for a more appreciative response.
The agenda will have been set and discussed beforehand and villagers attending the public meeting will be expected to act with a reasonable level of decorum.
Our fingers are crossed. The organisers will be charting new waters and run the risk of people deciding they don’t want to be managed and erupting once more. But that could spell the end, so let’s all be calm and give it a chance to work.
