Who says The Oakalls doesn’t want a shop?

Sir – I am writing in response to the letter in October’s Village magazine entitles “Who says The Oakalls wants a shop”?

I would dispute her comments and her reasoning about houses on the Oakalls demanding a higher price tag. They are not all larger and better built homes.

Maybe there are many homes on Oakalls that are bigger than those on Parklands (obviously, as the development is considerably larger), but not all. In fact, as Westbury Homes bought out Clarke Homes, builders of Parklands, the majority of the house designs on their section of Oakalls are those that have been built on Parklands (in particular the 4/5 bed detached), but the finish is not better at all.

I know this as I worked for Clarke Homes for some years and watched Oakalls being built. My husband and I used to look around the site frequently.
Therefore, I do not see why the prices are inflated on Oakalls, especially those that are the same as on our development. And we don’t need scaffolding up to our properties to get furniture up the stairwells, like those on the Oakalls – and I live in a two-bed semi on Parklands!

I don’t understand her comment that The Oakalls was not marketed as a “self-contained rural village”.  It was certainly marketed as a rural village (and a village normally has a shop), as the huge metal sign at the entrance to Parklands stated.

I would also question her comment about the grassland. It is an eyesore and not pretty at all when you come into the development off the highway. I agree that not every piece of land should be built on, but I would say that it should be kept tidy, which it is not.

I refer to the comments about people not having the time or inclination to visit local shops. Well, perhaps she may think again when she comes to retirement, and/or cannot walk far and/or cannot afford to keep getting a car out of the garage, polluting the atmosphere. I hope she doesn’t grow old or become disabled!
