Storm

Alvechurch amateur weatherman Phil Thomas records the changes.

May was a variable month, with low temperatures for the first few days, but then a very hot spell from the 5th to the 8th with a maximum of 25.8C on the 7th. The days alternated from warm to chilly from then onwards.

Most of the rainfall occurred on the 1st and 2nd of the month,19.6mm on those two days, with only 1mm falling on the 9th.

Up until the 18th, the mean temperature was 12.3C, meaning another month with temperatures above the local mean.

May 2018 (to the 18th)
Mean Max 17.7C   1.4 above average
Mean Min   6.9C   0.2 above average
Mean     12.3C   0.8 above average
Rainfall     20.6mm   37% of average
Sunshine 141.4 hrs 94% of average

April started much as March had ended, with cold wet weather and daytime temperatures well below normal, combined with cloudy overcast skies.

However, the monthly mean temperature was slightly above normal because of milder cloudy nights.

Due to the warm spring weather on the 18th and 19th, the monthly mean was 1.4C above normal, and the temperature reached 24.7C on the 19th. Rainfall was near normal at 71.1mm, 107% of the local mean.

April 2018
Mean Max 13.1C 0.3 above average
Mean Min   6.2C   2.6 above average
Mean     9.6C   1.4 above average
Rainfall   71.1 mm 107% of average
Sunshine 85.8 hrs 73% of average

Outlook
As we go to press, it looks like staying dry and relatively warm in the UK, with the potential for some very warm spells in some areas.

Computer models are less clear for June, although unsettled weather at the start seems a little more likely, with periods of rain or showers possibly becoming more frequent and widespread, and temperatures returning to normal.
