Evening sun in Rowney Green

Alvechurch amateur weatherman Phil Thomas records the changes.

It has been a very average, cold and wet summer, with not as much sunshine as we’d like!

August 2012 (to the 18th)
Mean Max 21.3C exactly average
Mean Min   12.9C 1.2C above average
Mean       17.1C   0.6C above average
Rainfall     46.6mm 89% of average
Sunshine   60.4hrs   41% of average

August has been very much an average month temperature-wise, the average being on the higher side because of some very warm nights and feeling quite humid.

There has been more showery activity than normal with three thunder storms on the 4th, 5th and 6th of the month. There has been less sunshine than would be expected, due to the significant amount of cloud around on the showery and humid days.

July 2012
Mean Max 19.9C 1.7C below average
Mean Min   11.3C 0.9C below average
Mean       15.6C   1.3C below average
Rainfall     107.3mm 174% of average
Sunshine   140.5hrs 90% of average

A very wet month with 107.3mm of rainfall, of which 56.7mm fell in the first seven days – i.e. 92% of the entire month’s average.

Sunshine was also well below normal from the 1st to the 20th with only 46.3 hours, the remaining 94.5 hours occurring over the last 11 days.

Temperatures were well below the local average, being boosted only by the hot spell from the 22nd to the 27th.

Outlook
Computer models are hinting at a drier and good September but they are not always to be believed.
