Alvechurch amateur weatherman Phil Thomas records the changes.

We had a very hot start to August with a maximum temperature of 30.6C on the 1st, the highest maximum since August 2003.

The month gradually became cooler with more near-average temperatures to date.

Rainfall has been around normal, with 22.0mm in one day on the 16th – exactly half of the month’s rainfall so far.

Before all that, we had a cool start to July with little or no rainfall. There was a dry period from the 3rd to the 21st with no rainfall measured.

Temperatures were well above the 30-year mean with a maximum of 30.4C on the 22nd, this being the highest since August 2003 at my site.

There was one very wet period with 29.7mm of rain on the 27th, nearly half the month’s rainfall in one day.
