Wintry scene

Alvechurch amateur weatherman Phil Thomas records the changes.

As we go to press, November has been very mild with average temperatures 4.5C above the local mean.

We had one of the warmest first three weeks for November in the Midlands (Central England Temperature) series. This temperature is taken from a number of weather stations in the Midlands area with records dating back to 1772).

The mild weather is mostly due to a south or south-westerly airstream bringing dull mild grey days. Apart from a brief much colder spell on the weekend of the 21st, it is set to be one of the mildest Novembers for many years.

November 2015 (to the 19th)
Mean Max   13.7C 3.9 above average
Mean Min   8.6C   5.0 above average
Mean       11.2C   4.5 above average
Rainfall     53.4mm   68% of average
Sunshine 23.3 hours 37% of average

October was a very dry month with no measurable rainfall from the 7th to the 20th. There were only 9 days with rainfall and most of it on only 4 days, the 5th, 6th, 20th and 29th.

Rainfall picked up a little towards the end of the month but was still below the local average at only 60%.

Temperatures remained above the local mean at 0.7C, primarily due to cloudy nights and fewer frosts than would be expected.

Sunshine was almost exactly normal due to some quite sunny days mixed with dull and grey anti-cyclonic weather with cloud from the east.

October 2015
Mean Max   14.3C   0.4 above average
Mean Min   7.3C   0.9 above average
Mean       10.8C   0.7 above average
Rainfall   54.3mm   60% of average
Sunshine 91.2 hours 99% of average

Outlook
December is usually a difficult month to predict. Will it be snowy or a white Christmas? Or the usual dull grey weather of early November?

Computer models are not very accurate beyond a week or so, but there is the chance of some seasonal cold weather – which is normal for December.
