Alvechurch amateur weatherman Phil Thomas records the changes.

June was a surprisingly normal month with temperatures very much around what we’d expect.

Rainfall was only 60% of the monthly average, and sunshine was 103% of average.

The combination of no ground frosts and some damp and warm days has allowed the plants to grow with a vengeance – not to mention the grass.

June 2013
Mean Max   18.8C   0.3 below average
Mean Min   10.0C   0.2 above average
Mean         10.4C   0.1 below average
Rainfall     35.0mm   59% of average
Sunshine   140.3 hrs 103% of average

The last few days of May did nothing to reverse the trend for wet and cold weather, which had been the main feature of 2013 so far.

Night-time temperatures were quite low with seven ground frosts, while 27.3mm of rain fell in less than 24 hours on May 14th.

May 2013
Mean Max   15.3C   1.0 below average
Mean Min   5.8C   0.9 below average
Mean       10.5C   1.0 below average
Rainfall     97.7 mm   176% of average
Sunshine   161.8 hrs   107% of average

Outlook

It seems that the beginning of July looks moderately settled and quite warm, with some showery spells at times.

So it seems we may be heading for a normal British summer, with less rain than of late and the odd warmer spell mixed in.

As usual, it is virtually impossible to be certain what lies in store for us!
