Alvechurch amateur weatherman Phil Thomas records the changes.

Despite the colder end to November, the month has had an above average mean temperature of 8.1C, which is 1.6C above the November average.

It has been a very cloudy month with only 72% of the average sunshine and also wet, with 134% of the month’s average. The expected long range forecast in the lead-up to Christmas is set to be average or a little below average temperatures, with about the normal rainfall.

So despite the chance of a few colder spells in the lead-up to Christmas Day, the probability is for a normal, snow-free Christmas Day.

* Weather lore: “No weather is ill, if the wind be still”.

The meteorologist’s explanation: Calm conditions, especially with clear skies, indicate the dominance of a high pressure area.

Because highs are broad regions of descending air, they discourage the formation of phenomena typically associated with weather, such as clouds, wind, and rain.
