October proved to be quite a sunny month, with 114 per cent of the sunshine expected for the whole month with seven days still to go.

So the summer ended with figures showing it to have been a fairly wet one, with 20 per cent more rain than average, although this was all thanks to August, during which we endured more than double the usual amount of rain . . .

After a relatively dry, if dull, July, four days in August drenched the area and pushed the monthly rainfall figure well above average. From August 19-22 (when The Village went to press) 59.0mm of rain fell, which pushed the monthly figure to 94.7mm – 139% of the monthly average . . .

It’s been the coldest winter in 30 years

The statement seems to have held true for this year, when we’ve had three winter months with much more snow than average, although some of the snow was from weather originating in the east.

The first couple of weeks of winter appeared be to quite normal with the usual quite mild, dull and damp start to the Christmas holidays. However, there were changes developing in the usual weather set-up for the coming weeks.

A large part of September was very dry. Up to the date of writing (the 20th) there had been a 17-day run of no measurable rainfall, after 20.6mm rain on the first three days of the month – nearly 30 per cent of the monthly average.

July was quite a notable month with the second highest rainfall locally over the last 20 years: 162.6mm,  which is 324 per cent of the local normal. The other wet July was in 2007 when we had 194.7mm of rain.

It has been a very mixed month. June started with quite warm conditions to the 5th. On the 5th we received 26.1mm rain, and 35.1mm on the 6th – a total of 61.2mm, which is 99 per cent of the entire month’s average rainfall.

Up to the time of writing, May has been quite cold, with the mean temperature to the 19th at 10.6C, which is -0.8C below average for the month. Rainfall, meanwhile, was already 51mm, which is 90% of the average for the entire month.
