Animal adventures at library

With more than 150 children already signed up, the Summer Reading Challenge has started with a bang!

If you’re 12 or younger and think you can read six library books before Sep 23, pop along to Alvechurch Library to sign up. You’ll get an Animal Agents-themed pack – and why not join in some of the events, from a craft session to a reading party?

* On Tues Aug 8 there are two Explore Learning Workshops: the first is “Zoo Adventures” from 2.15–3.15pm, when kids aged 5–7 years can learn how to act as an animal in disguise and create their own Animal Agent name! Please book.

Then from 3.30-4.30pm, those aged 7–12 can join “Agent School” – help find pirate treasure and show off your punctuation knowledge with a Kung-Fu showdown! Please book.


* On Sat Aug 12 there’s a “Design an Animal Agent” Workshop from 2.30–3.30pm. Please book.


* Mon Aug 21 brings a craft session led by the library’s Crafty Ladies. From 2.15–3.45pm, kids aged 7–12 can enjoy making Animal Agent felt puppets. Please book. Small charge of £1 per child.


* On Weds Aug 23 there’s an exciting day of workshops and author talks at Croome Park in Worcestershire, from 10–4pm – including a special visit from award-winning author Joanna Nadin.


* Finally, on Tues Aug 29 the library hosts a Reading Party from 2.30–4.30pm – bring a comfy cushion or pillow and the team will help you find a great book to snuggle up with.

Cold drink and snack provided for kids. Great event for reluctant readers or those stuck on what to read next. 80p per child.

Big Healthy Lunch at Cofton Park on Sunday July 9, 11am-3pm. Bring food to share, a blanket, and join this special “get together” with a healthy and active twist.

Fun Day at Farm

Dodford Children’s Holiday Farm hosts a Family Fun Day on Sat July 15, 12noon–4.30pm.

Have a look around, feed the animals, play in the playbarn.

Children’s workshops at library

Explore Learning will deliver two children’s workshops at Alvechurch Library on Fri June 2, free of charge.

Those aged 5-7 can enjoy A Day at the Zoo from 2.15–3.15pm– learn about descriptive words, rhyme and number facts from animals like the hysterical hyena and the humongous hippo. 

Then from 3.30–4.30pm, children aged 8–11 will have A Pirate Adventure – put yourself in the shoes of Jack Sparrow and experience life as a pirate. With diaries and creative writing, be inspired by the nautical world. Space will be limited so please call to book a place.

Join the reading challenge!

Alvechurch Library launches its Summer Reading Challenge on Sat June 24. This year’s theme is Animal Agents – a whole host of clever creatures, ready to solve all kinds of crimes!

If you’re 12 or younger and think you can read six library books before Sep 23, pop along on launch day from 10am–1pm or 2–4pm to sign up, collect your activity pack and complete the hunt around the library.

You’ll receive incentives during the challenge, and when you complete it you’ll be invited to a grand Medal Ceremony in the autumn.

School’s Summer Fete

A Summer Fete takes place at Lickey Hills Primary School and Nursery on Sat June 17, from 2-4pm. 

Free entry. Everyone welcome. There will be stalls run by each class as part of the school’s Enterprise Week, as well as games, cakes, face painting, refreshments and raffle.


Cricket coaching commences

Children & Families

Junior cricket coaching for all ages between five and 11 commences on Sunday April 30 at Alvechurch Cricket Club.

Sessions run from 10am to noon and continues every Sunday morning throughout the season.

Boys and girls of all abilities are welcome to enjoy cricket in a friendly environment. All kids’ coaching is led by ECB Level 2 or Level 3 qualified coaches with an emphasis on learning through fun games and activities.

Anyone wanting to try cricket is welcome and there is no charge for your child’s first coaching session. Cakes and refreshments are available for all parents and children.

Writing Workshop and Competition

Alvechurch Library is hosting a Writing Workshop and Competition:

For the past eight years, Explore Learning has been inspiring children to write, and so far over 47 million words have been written by children eager to win the prestigious first prize – a family trip to Disneyland Paris and £500 worth of books for their school, presented by guest judge Steve Backshall.

This year’s theme is “The Future” – children aged four to 14 are transported one thousand years to the year 3017, where a lot of things have changed. We’re looking for the best story of 500 words or fewer. Enter before Friday May 5!

Two free workshops will be held during the Easter holidays on Tues April 18, from 2.15–3.15pm for children aged four to seven and then 3.15–4.15pm for children aged eight to 10.

The Big Friendly Read

Wonderful workshops at library

Explore Learning will hold two workshops at the library during the Easter holidays.

On Thurs April 7 from 2–3pm there will be a Revolting Rhymes Workshop based on Roald Dahl’s funny collection of poems.

Aimed at 5–7 year olds, the workshop looks at how Dahl describes his characters and how descriptive words hint at their personalities.
 
From 3.15–4.15pm on the same day there will be a workshop for children aged 7-9 based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Put yourself in the shoes of Willy Wonka and design your own eye-watering chocolate bar!

Alvechurch Library offers a host of events during and after the festive season:

* On Tues Dec 8 it’s Christmas Celebrations in Words and Music from 11am – listen to Christmas readings by Alyson and Sally, Fiona performing with her harp and Alvechurch Writers performing some of their own work.

*  On Mon Dec 21, come in your pyjamas and hear some Christmas Bedtime Stories. There may be a special visit from Santa! Sessions 5.45–6.15pm and 6.45–7.15pm – places filling up fast so please book your place quickly. £2 per child.

*  Explore Learning Workshops take place on Tues Dec 22. First is a Gruffalo Workshop (11.30am-12.30pm) for 5–6 year-olds, designed to develop literacy skills through rhyme and description.

Next is a Wimpy Kid Workshop (2.15 –3.15pm) for 7–11 year olds – design your own diary entry to remember all the adventures of a day in your life. No charge for either workshop; contact the Library to book your place.

If you had a visit from Santa and found a new iPad or tablet in your stocking, three new courses will be right up your street.

*  iPad for Beginners on Mon Jan 11 (2.15–4.15pm) covers the basics such as turning the device on and off, the settings, how to open and close apps, how to take photos and how to use the internet. Cost £19.

*  ebay Basics on Mon Jan 25 (2.15–4.15pm) is a fun introduction workshop for anyone who would like to start buying and selling on eBay. Cost £19.

*  Social Networking on Mon Feb 8 (2.15–4.15pm) is an introduction to Facebook and Twitter: how to register, use and have fun on social networking sites. Cost £19.

Lickey’s Tiny Church

Children & Families

Lickey’s Tiny Church meets in Holy Trinity Church on Weds mornings from 11.15am to 12.45pm during term time. All babies and toddlers welcome, provided they bring their carers along too!

The tiny people can meet and play together, enjoy a snack and have lots of fun, while the adults chat over a cup of coffee or tea and cake. A chance to share tips and make friends.

The session ends with a simple story and lively singing with instruments where everyone can learn about God’s love.

Spooky charity night

An Alvechurch resident has organised a charity event in aid of SANDS, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity.

Amy Gathercole, who sadly lost her baby Emily-Mae in July this year, received support from SANDS as well as her family and friends in the village, and wanted to give something back.

The Halloween-themed event takes place on Sat Oct 31 at Alvechurch Social Club, starting at 5pm with face painting, fun and games for children and families.The fun continues with a family-friendly show featuring a magician and stand-up comedy from “Gary Gobstopper”.

There will then be a raffle with prizes such as vouchers for local pubs and restaurants, and an auction including a signed Leicester Tigers shirt and a holiday in Gran Canaria for a family of four.

Guests are encouraged to wear Halloween fancy dress – there will be a bottle of champagne for the best adult costume, and sweets for the best-dressed child.

Tickets are £5 for adults (free entry for kids) and can be purchased on the door.

THE NEW Ravens (North East Worcestershire Ravens Rugby League Club) play at Kings Norton Rugby Club, Hopwood Park, Ash Lane, Hopwood.

Free Grotto at Little Heath

A Free Grotto opens at Little Heath Garden Centre in Lickey End on Sat Dec 6, in aid of the Primrose Hospice and Greenfingers charity.

Santa will arrive on his sleigh at 10am, courtesy of Bromsgrove Lions Club, and the grotto will then open every weekend plus Dec 22 and 23 (all 11am to 3pm) and Dec 24 (11am–1pm).

Children can meet Santa and his reindeer free of charge – Little Heath welcomes donations to its chosen charities.

Each child receives a free sticker set, and photos of the experience will be available to purchase.

Fun at Christmas Fayre

The PTA Christmas Fayre at Lickey Hills Primary School (Birmingham Road, B45 8EU) takes place on Sat Nov 29, 2–4pm.

Santa enjoyed last year’s event so much, with all its new games and stalls, that he’s returning this year! This is a great family event with talented face painters Emily, Jo and Becky, and a range of prize-giving games for children (and adults!) to enjoy. 

Once the children have visited Santa in his grotto, played Bauble Bingo and Snowfall you can peruse the cake creations by KS1 pupils and, while the kids do crafts, relax with a cup of tea and a cake.

Summer of fun for youngsters at Artrix

Bromsgrove’s Artrix is offering plenty to do during the holidays with its Summer Family Fun Festival for youngsters aged four to 18.

There are two full-week Stage Schools for young performers, during which they will devise and rehearse a show to perform. Rock School is from July 28 to August 1, and Magic of Musicals is August 11–15. If you book the first Stage School, you can get the second one half price.

Children aged 6-11 can join Club Creative, a lively holiday club between Aug 4 and 8. There will be Sweetie Day, Jungle Day, Wonderland Day, Adventure Abroad Day and Time Machine Day and children can come for a day or the full week! Support with fees is available – please contact the venue for more details.

There are also Family Fun Fridays on August 1, 8 and 15 between 10.30am and 3pm. Bring a picnic and drop in for free craft activities, a free bouncy castle, face painting and different free events and performances each week. On Friday Aug 8, 2Faced Dance will perform on the patio.

There are lots of workshops to try out, from paper craft and pottery, urban dance and free running to graffiti art, DJ-ing, textiles and junk instrument making. Young performers can show off in the free Talent Show from 2.30–3.30pm on Friday Aug 15 – just call 01527 577330 to book your slot!

On August 1 at 2.30pm, StoryBox Theatre present their delightful puppet show The Steadfast Tin Soldier whilst “Hugless Douglas”, a bear in need of a hug, visits with Blunderbus Theatre at 2pm on August 8.

Films for a younger audience this summer include Maleficent, Legends of Oz, Postman Pat: The Movie and How to Train Your Dragon 2. Certain screenings are specifically accessible to disabled or special needs audiences.

Alvechurch Library offers a fun packed summer of reading with plenty of fun activities.

The Summer Reading Challenge is in full swing – children aged 2-11 years are challenged to read six books throughout the summer and collect the Mythical Maze goodies as they go along.

On Tues Aug 19, there are two workshops to enjoy: From 1.15am –12.15pm, explore the Groovy Greeks in a fun-packed literacy workshop, for children aged 8-10 years. Free of charge.

Then from 2.15pm - 3.15pm, meet Winnie the Witch in a literacy workshop for children aged 5-6 years. Free of charge.

There’s also a Poetry Competition – young writers are invited to submit a poem based on the Summer Reading Challenge or their favourite book. It can be short, long, rhyming or not; anything you like.

Categories 4-6 years, 7-9 years and 10-11 years. Closing date Sat Aug 31.

Meet the animals

Hillfields Animal Sanctuary in Blackwell has its first Open Day of 2014 on Saturday April 12 from 1–4pm, offering a great opportunity for families and children to meet the animals.

Founded in 1979 by Lyn Tudor, the sanctuary on Greenhill is home to more than 300 animals including horses, goats, pigs, ducks, dogs and cats – many of them rescued from cruelty or neglect.

This year’s theme is “Creepy House” with suitably creepy artwork by children’s writer and illustrator Chris Riddell, promising a spine-tingling introduction to books with lots of spooky fun along the way!

Simply borrow and read any six books – including e-books from the Worcestershire Libraries and Learning website – and collect spooktastic gifts along the way including stickers, bookmarks and key fobs for every two books read.

A certificate is attained on completion, with a medal ceremony at the end of the summer – that is, if you survive the challenge of the Creepy House… mwa ha ha!
