Christmas criticism over parish lights

Posted on January 11 2011 at 3:03:50

After aiming to bring as much Christmas spirit to village life as possible with new lights turned on earlier than ever, Alvechurch Parish Council is still on the receiving end of criticism.

Parish clerk Yvonne Goode told councillors at the monthly meeting last night that, after complaints the previous year that Barnt Green’s lights were much better and on for longer, Alvechurch had made a big effort this year.

New lights had been bought and they were switched on in November - but this still wasn’t enough for one resident.

“I have received a written complaint that the lights came down on January 2, rather than the 6th and that the resident was disappointed and disgusted by this.”

Ms Goode explained that the parish council’s approved contractor only carried out such work on Sundays and she had the choice of either the 2nd or the 9th and she had decided on the 2nd so they would be down by the 6th - traditional day for packing away Christmas decorations.

Coun Tom Thurrell pointed out that next year, the Sunday would be either the 1st or the 8th and moved that the council declare now that they will be coming down on the 8th.
