Fish fears allayed

A number of Villagers have contacted British Waterways expressing concern over the effect on fish of the new walkway at the dead arm of the canal in Alvechurch.

They feared there was no way for the fish to move in and out of the stretch , especially during the freezing conditions – and were particularly alarmed to see a large number of dead fish there after the thaw.

A BW official responded to explain that there had been similar incidents across the whole network and that it wasn’t just the dead arm that was frozen.

As further reassurance, BW sent a team (pictured) to check the pipes installed in the bund – created to replace the wooden footbridge –  and confirmed that they were clear and fish could pass through freely.
