Friendship for seniors

Posted on March 30 2019 at 3:13:25

The Lounge café and youth project in Alvechurch has expanded its offering with a new project aimed at helping senior citizens.

The “Friendship Matters” group has been designed exclusively for older people in the village who are at risk of loneliness and isolation, and will meet on Mondays from April 1.

The latest member of The Lounge team is Leeana Fitzpatrick (right), an expert in this field who is planning some lively and interesting sessions for the new initiative.

Leeana said: “I am very excited to be joining the team as the lead on the Friendship Matters project and I look forward to getting to know the community over the coming weeks.

“If you haven’t met me already, pop into the café on Mondays from April 1 for a coffee and a chat.”

Bill Ulyett, Chairman of The Lounge Trustees, said: “While the after-school diner and youth club have seen increased demand, we now recognise that there is also a need to help our senior citizens.

“The new project is a great milestone for us and shows how we are adapting to support our wider community.”

In the three years since a crisis meeting was called to address the future of  The Lounge, the dedication and hard work of the trustees and management team have ensured that not only was it saved, but that its future was secure.

The premises have been updated and revitalised, there’s a new team in place and the café is attracting more and more regular customers. The Lounge Lottery has launched with almost 100 active players.

“With support from Alvechurch Parish Council, local councilors and members of the wider community, we have been able to give employment opportunities to more than a dozen local people, some on their first steps into working life,” adds Bill.

Volunteers are always welcome, particularly in the management team and youth support.
