Going, going…

Villagers are mourning the loss of a landmark tree that had to be felled after a giant bough fell into the grounds of a children’s nursery.

The copper beech, which formed a gateway at the southern entrance to Alvechurch, was particularly splendid as it turned to gold during autumn, as pictured on the cover of this magazine in September 2007 (right).

The other pictures show the stages of its demise, which took two days. Jim Matthews, of Reeves Trees, which carried out the work, told The Village it was a sad task because it was perhaps the nicest tree in Alvechurch.

But after the bough weighing up to four tons fell into Sandhills Nursery – fortunately on a Sunday night – tree officers and other experts concluded there was no alternative but to fell the landmark.
