Hall’s future in balance

The future of the vacant Mission Hall in Cofton Hackett was being decided as The Village went to press.

Cofton parish councillors were split at their November meeting over a plan to sell the site in Barnt Green Road for development.

Coun Brannan said: “I think we should consider getting rid of the Mission Hall and instruct an estate agent to put it on the market.

“It is an asset we acquired by default and we should use the money for something else in the village.”

Coun Keith Duncan added: “I agree, it is going to be a millstone around the parish council’s neck.”

But Coun Brian Bridgewater said: “Why don’t we move into it? We are strapped for money, we pay rent to use the Village Hall, why don’t we use it? And if it isn’t used it is going to deteriorate fast.

“It has great potential for the community and has brand new central heating and disabled toilets.”

The parish clerk Barry Hodgson said the council had been advised by estate agents that the site could be worth £150,000.

Councillors asked him to find out how much the council could earn in rent from the hall and agreed they would then decide its future at their December meeting.
