Lottery grant boosts stained glass appeal

St Laurence Church in Alvechurch can go ahead with repairs to its historic stained glass windows thanks to a grant of £113,700 from the Heritage Lottery fund.

The grant means the target of £192,022 has been reached, helped by years of fundraising by the community.

Several of the windows were designed and made by famous glass artists, but after 160 years some pieces of glass have fallen out and many of the windows are no longer weather-tight. Some of the stonework surrounds have crumbled.

A church spokesman said, “Thanks to the support of our congregation, our local community and the Heritage Lottery Fund, we are able to embark on the necessary repair and conservation work.

“It’s great to know that we are a step closer to preserving the heritage for future generations.”
