MP accepts fate

Village MP Julie Kirkbride has ended speculation that she may still stand for the Bromsgrove seat at the General Election.

She originally fell on her sword at the height of the MPs’ expenses scandal last summer, but was reported to have asked the local Tories if they might still consider selecting her.

This led to strong criticism - and some robust support - from readers of The Village and

But in her website’s Christmas message Ms Kirkbride wrote: “I want to take this opportunity to confirm to you, my constituents, that I will not be representing you all after the next General Election.

“I am sad to be leaving but this is entirely my decision.”

Alan Dent, chairman of Bromsgrove Conservative Association, said she had “decided for the good of the party and Bromsgrove she will not be seeking re-election at the next General Election”.

He added: “Without doubt she has been a tremendously hard working, caring hands-on MP, who has helped a great number of her constituents with a wide range of problems. She was also never afraid to give her support to causes she thought would be of benefit to Bromsgrove residents.

“The Conservative Party in Bromsgrove must now move on.”
