‘One-lane road’ danger fears

“Dangerous” parking on Station Road in Alvechurch is to be addressed by the county council’s Highways department after residents and councillors expressed concerns.

The parish council heard that reduced parking space in the unfinished railway car park was causing “overspill” on to Station Road, described by Coun Adrian Smith as “a one-lane road” with near-misses and people having to go up on the kerb to get past.

District councillor Charlie Hotham held a meeting with residents, some of whom called for double yellow lines.

“The situation around the bend adjacent to School Lane is dangerous and I have discussed this with the Highways engineer who is in initial agreement,” Coun Hotham later told The Village.

“Worcester will only put double yellow lines down where a traffic hazard is identified, so a more detailed assessment will now be carried out. Residents in the vicinity would be consulted on any potential scheme, but this is the first stage of quite a lengthy process.”

* Rail commuters blocking parking spaces are thought to have prompted a new control system at The Victoria pub in Barnt Green. Parish councillors heard that bollards had been installed at the car park to prevent people parking there from early morning.

“It looks like it is only going to be open during the pub’s business hours,” said Coun Hotham.
