Parking talks in crisis

The deal to save more than 50 car parking spaces for villagers to use in the centre of Alvechurch is in danger of unravelling.

Talks have been continuing for more than a year between Alvechurch Sports & Social Club, which owns the car park, Bromsgrove District Council and Alvechurch Parish Council.

They are trying to reach a new agreement over public use of the site after the previous 10-year arrangement ran out last autumn. But parish councillors heard at their monthly meeting that when the deal was put to club committee members they had raised a number of objections.

Council chairman John Cypher read out a letter from the club containing seven areas to be settled. Among them was the club’s request that members could use the car park at all times without restrictions.

Coun Cypher said the club talked of “going to ‘Plan B’”, which is that the car park would not be available for the people of the village.

“We are now trying to set up a meeting with the committee,” he added. “There is no one who is against us trying to find a way forward, but we do not want it at any price.”
