Installation of the long-awaited lifts at Barnt Green railway station may have moved a step closer, parish councillors heard.

Parish clerk Tracy Bodley said Network Rail project sponsor Richard Dugdale had been in touch after a meeting with the Department for Transport to say the “decision to design” the lifts had now been approved.

He had, however, been warned to expect a challenge on costs.

Coun Joe Nilsson said: “That sounds like, ‘we are going to do this, but there is no way we are going to do this’.”

But parish chairman Robert Cholmondeley said: “My understanding is there are hoops to go through but they will be built by the end of next year.”

*  Barnt Green parish councillors agreed they would go door knocking around the village between 2–4pm on November 28 and December 12 to raise awareness of the SmartWater project.

The tally of households taking part so far was 96, with 300 being the target.
