Success for new WI

Posted on April 30 2005 at 6:23:36

Last October the President of Blackwell & Burcot Women’s Institute suggested to the chairman of the Worcester Federation of the Women’s Institute (WFWI) that Blackwell should have an evening WI, for ladies who are unable to attend the afternoon meetings of the Blackwell & Burcot branch.

A meeting was organised in ‘The Wheel’ at St Catherine’s Church and fliers were delivered around the village. There was a tremendous response, and on November 18, an initial meeting was held in The Wheel, with members of the WFWI present to explain the running and work of a WI.

Sufficient ladies volunteered to form a committee and by popular consent the title of ‘St Catherine’s’ was adopted.

Since then, this new branch has proved very popular. Each month more ladies have joined permanently or attended as visitors.

A varied programme of speakers has included Mrs Barbara Masrell on Life In Japan; Monica Carden, a retired prison governor; and Felicity Rutson who demonstrated Thai cookery.

The April meeting welcomed Jackie Gregory of Associated Women of the World, to which the WI is affiliated.

Meetings take place at 7.30pm in The Wheel on the third Thursday of each month. The May meeting will feature a Silent Auction, and in June Jackie Nicoljohn will give a flower demonstration.

The St Catherine’s branch is open to ladies from all surrounding villages. For more information, call Dorothy Radford on 0121 445 2137.
