Tale of two Jeremys

Clarkson and Turkish Knight

The New Year’s Day mummers play in Alvechurch offered topical characters to cheer or boo, before the Morris dancers took the floor.

The play, which took place as always outside The Crown at Withybed Green, featured ‘Jeremy Clarkson’, who appeared brandishing a gear stick before being killed by The Turkish Knight, to the crowd’s delight (above).

‘Jeremy Corbyn’ was also in the cast, as was ‘Sepp Blatter’ and regulars Old Father Time, The Press, Beelzebub, Sweet Moll, St George and the dragon. This year the dragon had been re-branded as a VW vehicle – cue more booing!

Afterwards the men of Alvechurch Morris and ladies of Aelfgythe Border Morris – plus visiting sides – did their stuff outside The Crown and then in The Square.

The mummers play raised £206, which will be donated to the fundraising campaign in memory of village youngster Finlay Church.
