In Full . . .

A time and a place

I entirely agree with Wendy Glynn (Village Views, February 2013) about the Christmas Eve service at St Laurence Church, Alvechurch.

Her letter was almost identical to the one I put through the Rector’s door on Boxing Day.

My son and family have loved coming to that service as it is the start of Christmas and such a lovely experience.  Not this time.

We all went home so tense and unhappy and in fact after the family had gone home I had a good cry.

At this time, when we are trying to encourage people to come to church with their children, it was enough to put them off for ever.

The Christmas services attract many people who believe in Christ but do not often attend church and all they want is to sing carols and see a simple Nativity story and to go home with that feeling of contentment.

It doesn’t mean we don’t care about the troubles of the world, but there is a time and place for discussing those problems and it was very much a step too far.

A sincere prayer would have been more in keeping and I feel there will be more empty seats at the next Christmas Eve service.
