Feed the birds

Most of us use the Lickey Hills, whether we live in Birmingham or not. For a while now, I’ve noticed that the bird feeders located on the slope outside the visitors’ centre had not been filled up for ages. I asked a member of staff why this was, and was told that they couldn’t afford the bird feed because of council cutbacks etc.

Then, a couple of weeks or so ago, I noticed that the feeders had gone completely. Again I asked why and was told the same story: there was no money to fill them up. I suggested that a tin be left out so that people could make a contribution – I for one would put a quid in from time to time to keep them stocked, and I’m sure others would as well.

I was given what I thought was a feeble explanation as to why they couldn’t do this – something about them having to account for all of the money put in the tin, and the potential for it to “cause problems”. I didn’t understand either.

The bottom line is that this is simply wrong. It was nice to have a coffee and watch the birds on the feeders. My young son is not impressed!
