Fields used to be fine

I have been reading the article in The Village magazine concerning the state of the football pitch in The Meadows playing field.

I fully agree with Mrs Sage’s comments about its present state and that every effort should be made to carry out drainage work in order that it can be put to good use by local football teams.

My brother and brother-in-law both played in the very successful local team in the 1950s and I do not recall any match being postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

The field was also used in the summer months by Alvechurch Cricket Club before they moved to their present ground.

There was also a thriving tennis club with grass courts, which has unfortunately become derelict, and the courts were never waterlogged.

Everything possible should be done to solve the drainage problem so that the pitches can be put to the use that the Wiggins family intended.
