Hewell memories

Posted on September 20 2013 at 11:58:34

I was stationed at Hewell Grange from 1945 to 1946. Although life there was rather primitive, I thoroughly enjoyed the 18 months I was there, mainly through the kindness of the people of Redditch and the history surrounding us at Hewell.

When the war ended we spent nearly a whole year moving the tanks and Bren gun carriers that were stored there to all parts of the UK, mainly to RAF airfields that were being closed down. (There was no live ammunition at Hewell as some reports have suggested).

I was an 18-year-old rookie when I was posted there and have always felt an attachment to Hewell and Redditch.

Having learnt what they are using Hewell for now, I have no wish to be posted there again!
