My daughter, Denise, seems to think the snake (Village Views, November 2013) is a grass snake because of the yellow band behind the head.

It can grow up to 1m and isn’t venomous, but can squirt evil-smelling yellow fluid from vents if handled.

They are excellent swimmers, feeding on fish, frogs and newts. The female can lay 30-40 eggs during the summer.
