In Full . . .

Young players need a pitch

Having read the report in the local press about the problem of the Alvechurch playing fields being constantly waterlogged, I have strong views about the need for this problem to be eradicated.

Between November and March (which is at least half of the recognised football season), the occasions on which the soccer fields are fit to play are very few and far between.

There is no doubt in my opinion that their condition has worsened over the years. I remember playing football myself for the Alvechurch Cricket Club football team in the early 1970s at “The Meadows” as it has locally been known.

Very few matches were lost due to a waterlogged pitch. At the time there were two pitches in operation which were used on a Sunday and by boys’ teams on Saturday afternoons as well.

I have taught at Alvechurch Middle School for the past 25 years. For most of these years there have hardly been any boys’ or girls’ soccer clubs in the area but suddenly over the past two or three years there has been an explosion of these teams.

I believe there are now nine Alvechurch-based teams of school age running – The Meadows is needed more than ever before. I feel it is a crying shame if local teams continue to have to travel to Redditch and beyond for “home” matches.

I sincerely hope that a solution is found to this problem – which will greatly benefit the local population.
