Early taste of summer

Alvechurch amateur weatherman Phil Thomas records the changes.

April started much as March had ended, with cold wet weather. Daytime temperatures were well below normal, combined with cloudy overcast skies.

However, the monthly mean temperature was slightly above normal because of milder cloudy nights, and because warm weather on the 18th and 19th pushed it 1.1C above normal. The temperature reached 24.7C on the 19th.

April 2018 (to the 20th)
Mean Max  12.7C   0.1 below average
Mean Min   5.9C   2.3 below average
Mean        9.3C    1.1 above average
Rainfall      44.9mm   67% of average
Sunshine  50.3 hrs  43% of average

March saw very cold temperatures for the first few days. The 1st of March was an ice day with a maximum of -2.3C. followed by -1.0C maximum on the 2nd and -0.3C on the 18th.

The middle of March turned much milder before temperatures plummeted on the night of the 16th with further snow.

Temperatures returned to near normal by the end of the month, but turned more unsettled. There was a very wet day on the 30th with 26.3mm in 24 hours.

March 2018
Mean Max  8.1C  1.9 below average
Mean Min   1.4C    1.0 below average
Mean        4.7C    1.5 below average
Rainfall   126.1 mm  280% of average
Sunshine  71.7 hrs  76% of average

As usual computer models don’t show a very reliable forecast. May appears to be a fairly average month if the models are correct – some warmer dry spells mixed in with showery rain at times.

The weather on the whole looks settled.
