The Lounge saved by cash lifeline

An acclaimed village youth project came within days of being closed down over the summer.

But The Lounge was saved when Bromsgrove District Council agreed to continue its financial backing.

The doors could have been closed at the Alvechurch venue on August 31 after Bromsgrove’s officers asked for evidence the project could be self-sustaining.

Lounge treasurer Dave Shoesmith told parish councillors in July: “We have been asked to provide a business plan for 2013-14 to prove that we are not just going on blind faith.

“But if it is not forthcoming with the £20,000 we need, The Lounge will close its doors on August 31.

“It will be very disappointing if that’s what actually happens.”

But by mid-August, word came through that The Lounge had proved its case. “I received a call to say we were getting the £20,000 and two days later it was in the bank account,” Dave told The Village last month.

This means The Lounge, which has received praise from all quarters – including the police, who say it has had a marked effect on antisocial behaviour – is financially secure until next April.

Meanwhile it has applied for £51,000 over three years to pay for youth workers from the Positive Activities fund, administered by the county council.

Its position is also being bolstered by the growing success of The Lounge cafe, which has seen takings rise to as high as £130 a day from around £90 a week a year ago.
